I am almost afraid to think of Joe Abercrombie writing a book for young readers, but HarperCollins apparently is not worried in the least. They just paid a large six-figure sum for a new trilogy from the Lord of Grimdark.
The first book will be Half a King and is due to be published in 2014. It's described as a "classic coming-of-age tale" set in an alternative historical world at a time similar to the Dark Ages. It will focus on Yarvi, the youngest son of a warlike king, who can never live up to his father's expectations, partially due to his crippled hand. HarperCollins bid on the project almost immediately after receiving the submission.
“I've never experienced such universal enthusiasm for a project in all my years at HarperCollins. We received the submission on a Wednesday and by Thursday afternoon everyone had read and adored it - the whole building was buzzing with the huge potential for this series."-- Jane Johnson, Acquiring Editor
In all seriousness, I'm looking forward to more Abercrombie and would be very interested to see a different world and atmosphere around his work. He has always had strong character work, something that appeals to me personally, and a good feel for action and drama. This will definitely be a must-buy for fantasy readers next year.
“With this trilogy I’ve set out to do something a little different—shorter, tighter, and with a broad, page-turning appeal—while still giving readers the vivid characters, crunching action, twisting plots and black humour that I’m known for.” -- Joe Abercrombie
